Excellence in regenerative medicine
The main objective of the project is to create and develop an excellent research centre in the field of regenerative medicine. The activities of the project are focused on the regeneration of damaged tissues that cannot yet be treated or whose regenerative capacity is limited.
Regenerative medicine is a promising new field focused on the repair or replacement of tissues or organs that have lost function due to age, disease, damage, or birth defects. It is a multidisciplinary field involving tissue engineering, molecular biology, and nanotechnology. The research agenda of the project is to create and develop an excellent research centre focused on R&D in the field of regenerative medicine therapeutic methods, which have the potential to produce applicable R&D results in the long term and which will contribute to the development of the Czech Republic's competitiveness in the field. The excellence and uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that its research aims at restoring tissues whose damage cannot yet be treated or whose regenerative capacity is very limited. These include, in particular, damage to the nervous tissue of the brain and spinal cord, including the problem of neurodegeneration and retinal degeneration, as well as small-diameter vessel replacements, which are still lacking on the market (or in clinical practice), and last but not least, active healing of chronic wounds and osteochondral defects, which are also among the major problems of modern society. The unifying element of the whole project is "Medical devices for modern therapies", namely products for gene therapy, somatic cell therapy and tissue engineering products.
